Materials selection and components

These are the materials that i am currently using.

Aluminium  absorber tubes-  These form the basis of the collector riser tubes

Aluminium manifold and aluminium supply piping that can be threaded to suit a range of fittings

Methacrylate structural adhesive to bond the absorber tube to the manifold. Methacrylate is widely used in aerospace industry and is resistant to high temperatures. Its long term suitability for solar collectors is yet to be proved.

Polycarbonate glazing- currently using ‘off the shelf’ clear corrugated polycarbonate roofing

Initial prototypes are using Polystyrene as insulation, hot wire cut to form the CPC profile. This will be replaced by Polyisocyanurate for any functional prototypes.

Fluted polypropylene (Coreflute/coroplast) for the backing and sides.

Construction adhesive for gluing the glazing and backing to the insulation

Folded Mylar strips, glued into the CPC groves with small dabs of epoxy.

Polyurethane expander foam (from can) to surround and support the manifold pipes.

Polyurethane sealant adhesive to line outside joints.
